Dolphins searching for players as season opener approaches
AFTER winning the First XI flag for the first time in a decade last season, Lorne Cricket Club is again on the search for cricketers to join up for 2023-24.
The Dolphins fielded a side in the Colac District Cricket Association (CDCA) last year for the first time in 10 seasons, narrowly missing out on finals in Division 3.
Lorne president Darren Balderas took the club’s roster plight to social media last month, citing the club’s coming pre-season match with Deans Marsh.
“Well I’m feeling nervous about getting the Lorne Cricket Club up and playing again,” Balderas wrote.
“Training started one month ago, and we had four the first night. The season starting on October 21.
“A lot of work has gone into trying to get this club back, but we need players now.
“We have the backing of sponsorship, we have the Stribling Committee of Management backing the club, the Surf Coast Shire getting the ground and pitch ready.
“I’ll leave it in your hands Lorne.”
Mr Balderas told the Times News Group numbers were stabilising at about seven with the season start date just a fortnight away.
The Dolphins made history earlier this year by hosting the CDCA’s first game under lights, with a resounding six-wicket win over Colac-based club City United.
Lorne will also host two twilight fixtures in season 2023-24.
The first will take place on January 12, the day before the town’s annual Pier to Pub event, which brings in more than 20,000 visitors to the Surf Coast town.
The second will take place on January 26 – Australia Day.
“We had a lot of exciting moments last season, and it just brought a buzz back to Lorne in a sporting sense over the summer months,” Balderas said.
“Our weekly community Thursday dinners are already taking off with 80 supporters of the club in attendance most recently and will continue into the season.
“Once we have our First XI sorted for this season, the club will again compete in Division 3.”
