Dunne finds new ground with women’s appointment
FORMER president of the Torquay Cricket Club, Rob Dunne, will take the reins of an exciting new position within the club for 2022/23.
Dunne, who stepped away from the club presidency at the end of last season, has been appointed Torquay’s women’s coach for the coming campaign following the side’s Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition premiership last season under former head coach Lisa Robinson.
Dunne said he was more than willing to take on the role given his strong commitment to the growth of female cricket in the region.
Daughter Bella and wife Tina Vomero were also a part of the line-up that won the BWCC C Grade premiership last week and will again don the Tigers uniform in 2022/23.
“Female cricket has enjoyed strong growth since the introduction of the BWCC and there are many, many people to thank for that,” Dunne said.
“My goal this year as women’s coach is to ensure that our club culture remains strong, and females of all abilities can enjoy their cricket.
“We have a nice blend of experience and young up-and-comers, so this year is shaping up to be our best yet.
“As defending C Grade champions, finding the right mix of fun and competitiveness is a focus of this season and I know we have the personnel to nail that.”
Torquay women’s coordinator Paige Zotti said Dunne’s knowledge of the game and enthusiasm within the club made him an ideal choice as coach.
“Rob has been a huge contributor to our club and has been especially supportive of women’s and girls’ cricket throughout his time,” Zotti said.
“After putting in so much work as president it would have been understandable if he’d chosen to have a break this year, but he is passionate about cricket and will be a fantastic coach for our group.
“We are welcoming new women’s players of all abilities for this season. From those who have played many games, to the first time picking up a bat, we cater for all levels of cricket experience.”
Dunne received the prestigious Barry Sexton Trophy for best clubman earlier this year, recognising his service as president.
