NEWTOWN & Chilwell and St Joseph’s are set to clash in the Geelong Netball League A Grade Grand Final today (Friday, September 26) in a huge top-two battle at Kardinia Park.
It will be the Eagles’ eleventh straight Grand Final appearance and the second year in a row the team has played the Joeys in the ultimate match of the season.
The two sides faced off just a fortnight ago in the semi-final, which saw Joeys win by five points to be the first side to qualify. While the team enjoyed a week’s rest, the Eagles held off a plucky Geelong West outfit to hang on by five points in last weekend’s Preliminary Final at West Oval.
St Joseph’s handed Newtown & Chilwell the side’s only loss in the home and away season back in Round 7. Combined with the Semi-Final win, it should give Joeys plenty of confidence despite heading into the match the lower-ranked side.
For the Eagles, the experience of skipper Julia Woolley will be key in getting the team over the line. The goal shooter was awarded best on court in the side’s Grand Final win last year, as well as in 2017.
Joeys will be hoping young gun Ella Closter can continue her consistent goal scoring ways that saw her finish second in the Hot Shot award.
South Barwon will take on St Mary’s in both the B and C Grade Grand Finals, with the Swans also gunning for the D Grade flag against St Joseph’s. Grovedale and Leopold will face off for the E Grade premiership.
