Eagles too strong for Swans in Preliminary Final
NEWTOWN & Chilwell will face off with Colac in next week’s Geelong Netball League Grand Final after defeating South Barwon in the Preliminary Final.
The Eagles eliminated the Swans, 57-49, yesterday afternoon (Saturday, September 16) at Leopold Memorial Park to reduce the finals pool to two teams.
Both Newtown and South Barwon came out of the starting blocks firing with 32 combined scores made in the first quarter, but it was the latter getting out to a 15-17 lead at the opening break.
The Eagles answered back in a big way with an 18-9 second term to lead by a commanding seven goals at half time.
Newtown & Chilwell expanded its lead to nine scores at the final intermission, leading 45-36.
The Eagles held onto that margin until the final siren to claim the victory by nine goals.
Newtown shooter Uneeq Palavi put on her best performance of the finals notching up 51 goals alongside captain Julia Woolley, who pitched in six goals of her own.
Palavi, Ruby Pekin-Schlicht and Amy Wirth were listed as the Eagles’ best-on-court.
South Barwon shooter Ellen Doyle and Olivia Cameron did what they could muster at the scoring end, tacking on 39 and 10 goals respectively.
Maddison McKiernan, Charlotte Morey, and Georgia Corbett were named best-on-court for the Swans.
Newtown & Chilwell and Colac’s Grand Final next weekend will be the second year in a row the two sides meet to decide the Geelong premiership.
Action commences next Saturday (September 23) from 3.20pm back at Leopold Memorial Park.
