HISTORY was made as FC Leopold fielded a women’s team for the first time at the weekend. Fittingly, FC Leopold faced off against fellow newcomers Armstrong United at Estuary Reserve on Saturday. The Greens started brightly with running dynamo Johanna Olivia running the Armstrong midfield ragged with fellow midfielder Sian Malone.

Caitlyn Hamilton threatened the United goal constantly, supplied from the wings by Emily Hamilton, Jackie Foster and Lilah Papalia. Solid at the back with Sam Lade, Kylie Brouwers, Taylah Gray, Harriet Crawford and Matilda Hall. Karen Costello was the first half goal custodian and Gray the second, both a safe pair of hands.

Hamilton broke the deadlock with a cracker of a shot from a through ball from Olivia. United hit back in the second half to tie it up at 1 all. Some great spells up forward by Mel Le Noble and Ang Saltalamacchia. Hamilton broke through again with a powerful strike but United hit back almost immediately to tie it up at 2 and 2.

As United tired, the greens were unlucky not to capitalise on a lot of chances, in particular a mazy run from Hall that was well saved by United’s keeper.  It was not to be and the game ended all square.

A thoroughly entertaining game enjoyed by all.
