ONLY five games remain for the Surf Coast Chargers to shore up its finals spot in Big V Division 2 with the run home tipping off on Sunday against a struggling Wallan.

Chargers head coach Dave Scott said his side is keen to get back into the winner’s column, looking to avoid a third consecutive loss after back to back defeats to Collingwood and Mildura.

“With just a handful of games to go the games become ever so more important,” Scott said.

“It’s a very strong competition this year, a lot stronger than in previous years, but we’re positioned well, and chemistry is coming together for the team.

“Defensively we’re improving as well, so we’re going confidently, and every game is a challenge. We don’t take any teams lightly, even Wallan who haven’t had the season they’ve wanted results wise.”

The Chargers sit idly in third position on the ladder with eight wins and five losses with a handful of games to play.

Big V Division 2’s finals structure ensures the top five make it through to the knockout stage of the season with positions one to three guaranteed a second chance opportunity in the postseason.

Coach Scott took a moment to praise the efforts of youngster Harry Moran for a strong first season at Wurdi Baierr Stadium, providing a valuable presence in the Chargers’ frontcourt this season.

“We’ve had a lot of energy from our younger guys this season,” Scott said.

“One of our starters in Harry Moran is a young and tall 6’7” who has shown a lot of promise and continues to develop.

“We recognise not only his improvement but also the team as a whole and we’ve adopted a next player up mentality that everyone has bought into.”

Starter George Tito is also enjoying extra minutes in the starting five, being thrust into the main rotation over the past two games, finishing with six points his last time out.

The Chargers Round 14 clash against Wallan begins on Sunday, June 30 at 1pm, before the side returns home in Round 16 on July 13 to host Sherbrooke.
