The Riverview Fishing Classic was started by a group of friends from the Riverview Caravan Park.

ABOUT 40 fishers took part in the fifth Riverview Fishing Classic, a fundraising event started by a group of friends from the Riverview Caravan Park.

President Jim Pound and his committee raised more than $6,000 for Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club (OGSLSC) from the most recent competition held on December 29.

These funds will go towards vital lifesaving equipment and fitting out the club’s brand new state-of-the-art clubhouse develpment due to be finished in mid-2019.

Mr Pound said the Riverview Fishing Classic had raised more than $15,000 for the Ocean Grove SLSC since it began.

During the latest competition, 187 fish were landed, including 113 flathead, 28 whiting, 26 squid, two gurnard, eight salmon, two snook, one garfish, five leather jacket, one blue wrasse and one Yakka.

The Riverview Fishing Classic raises money by relying on the generosity of sponsors
and charging a small fee to enter the fishing
competition or for joining them for the feast of
fish afterwards.

“OGSLSC president David Pavia came to the camp kitchen to update everyone on how the money we raise every year is put to use,” Mr Pound said.

“All the fish were cooked up by our chef (who was one of the winning fishermen this year).”
