THE Barwon Heads Cricket Club and Barwon Heads Football Netball Club clashed on the cricket pitch for their annual Australia Day fundraising match on January 26.

Played in a T20 format, the two sporting teams battled it out, with the football club winning the men’s game and the cricket club taking out the women’s.

Football club president Russell Hyland said it was one of the biggest crowds he had seen at the cricket club.

“That was fantastic to start with and it ranged in age from toddlers and babies through to 80-year-old people, so [there was] every sort of people from the community, all age groups, all walks of life,” he said.

“It was a really good day with live music, there was a lot of celebrities there, Mark Howard played for the cricket club and the footy club had Joel Selwood.”

Harry Highland took to the crease in front of one of the biggest crowds to attend the cricket club.

This was the first year the women’s side was added to the match, with many of the players taking to the ground for the first time.

Both games were close, although the men’s was slightly tighter and higher scoring, with the footballers getting over the line.

“We had the boundaries brought in so the crowd was on the edge of the ground and there was a lot of sixes hit into the crowd and quite a few catches taken, and probably more catches dropped in the crowd, but it was fun for everyone,” Hyland said.

The winning team from both teams gave $500 to the Barwon Heads CFA.
