From The Mat – October 12, 2017
The Greens Bar and Bistro is up and running, and creating plenty of excitement along the way.
Under the leadership of head chef Mark Furborough, with Richard Morgan and Glen O’Shannessy at his side, the Bistro has set a target of becoming Torquay’s “go to” spot for a meal or a drink.
Mark and his crew all worked together at the 13th Beach Golf Club and were lured here by the chance to “establish something special in our own backyard” as all three call Torquay home.
Working in a fully refurbished kitchen the team offers a completely new and extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner menu along with daily specials.
These can be enjoyed with wines, spirits, cocktails and a great variety of beers from the bar.
An extra attraction that should suit bowlers and people who aren’t looking for a full meal is the range of light snacks being introduced at very affordable prices. These snacks will be available from the bar area and also are on offer to non-members.
Mark says that while it may seem a little counter-productive for a restaurant to offer cheaper fare, it was all part of the club’s “focus on making the facilities a true community hub where everyone can enjoy some of the best views to be had along the Surf Coast”.
Getting back on to the greens, the MidWeek and Saturday pennant competitions have begun in earnest with heaps of new bowlers getting their first taste of inter-club competition.
This year Torquay has expanded its Saturday commitment to seven teams, with four MidWeek.
To date our results have been mixed but it is far too soon to tell what the future holds as we already are seeing the emergence of some exciting new talent in our ranks.
