Future of surfing on show at Torquay

MORE than 60 of the country’s top junior surfers battled it out in wild surf at Torquay over the weekend in the Victorian Micro Groms Cup.

It was victory at sea conditions on Saturday, before conditions slightly improved Sunday to crown event champions over six divisions.

In the Under 14 Girls final it was Torquay local Stevie O’Day who was the standout across the event.

O’Day was dominant in the final with a near perfect wave score of 9.33 out of a possible 10 points, finishing on a total score of 16.66.

“It was really fun out there,” she said.

The Under 14 boys top four: (L-R) Levi Vosloo, Teddy Robertson, Harry Cleary and Eden Hawken.

 

“There was heaps of closeout sections to hit, I had such a good time.”

Fellow Surf Coast surfer and 2024 champion Estella Carbonelli (Jan Juc) finished second, Scarlett Rennie (Phillip Island) was third and Sophie Day (Rye) finished fourth.

Point Lonsdale’s Edie McBean won the Under 10 girls division.

 

Surfing in his first nationally ranked junior event, Levi Vosloo (Barwon Heads) took to the challenging conditions with ease.

Vosloo locked in an excellent heat score of 16.66 out of a possible 20 in the Under 14 final to oust 2024 champion Teddy Robertson (Torquay).

Harry Cleary (Sorrento) was third and Eden Hawken was fourth.

“The waves got way better this afternoon for the final” Vosloo said.

“I just tried to go big on every wave!”

Scarlett Rennie finished third in the Under 14 girls.

 

Other event champions on the day included Ella Campbell (U12 Girls, Wombarra NSW), Raff Morris (U12 Boys, Sorrento), Edie McBean (U10 Girls, Pt Lonsdale), Sani Hellman (U10 Boys, Ulladulla NSW) and Ronnie Hellman (U8 Mixed, Ulladulla NSW).
