Geelong prepares to host T20 World Cup opener
IT IS now less than a year until Geelong will host the opening match of the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 Men’s World Cup.
Kardinia Park has been selected as the venue for the first two games of the tournament.
While qualifying for the World Cup is still ongoing, it has been confirmed that Sri Lanka will play in the first match on Friday October 18.
City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said she was delighted for Geelong to be part of the tournament.
“Geelong is excited to be one of just eight Host Cities nationally for the first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ever to be held in Australia.
“We’re sure our local community will embrace the event and join in the celebrations.”
Geelong will host six World Cup games in total, with all of them being double-headers. A single ticket will gain spectators entry to both games.
Tourism and Events portfolio chair Cr Ron Nelson said hosting the tournament was a great opportunity for the city.
“Geelong’s selection as a host city for this tournament further stamps us as a destination for major sporting events, and recognises Kardinia Park’s status as Australia’s best regional stadium.
“Our local economy will receive a huge boost as thousands of spectators arrive for the week of matches. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, retail and our many attractions will all be in high demand.”
Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children.
