Hells Djarrak is back in 2024

ONE of VICTORIA’S most prestigious surfing trophies will be hoisted high into the air by the winners of Torquay Boardriders’ annual Hells Djarrak multi-club invitational next month.

More than 40 of the state’s best surfers will have their eyes firmly set on securing “The Bunjil” on August 31 at Bells Beach/Djarrak.

The trophy was carved by Surf Coast artist Raph Buttonshaw and depicts the creator spirit, the eagle Bunjil, who is the protector of Bells Beach/Djarrak.

Hells Djarrak will feature one male and one female surfer from each of the state’s boardriders clubs, including Jan Juc, South Coast, 13th Beach, Phillip Island and Peninsula Surfriders.

Torquay Boardriders will also invite some of their own surfers to compete.

Invitations went out to talent last week, with wildcards into the event set to be determined by the sub-committee soon.

Torquay Boardriders Club president Tully Wylie said the event was one not to miss.

“We cannot wait for Hells Djarrak this year, and for a good chance at running in perfect Bells bowl conditions.

“It’s certainly our biggest event on our calendar and a great chance for our club to take on the best from across the state.

“Any event you compete at Bells is special and with such a prestigious trophy up for grabs all competitors will be putting everything on the line to win the event.”

The winner of the Open Men and Open Women division will be awarded $1,000.

The best combined boardriders team result will win $500 for their respective club.

A social shoutout division will complement the professional division, with some special guests from sponsors Roxy and Quiksilver slated to appear.
