Jarrod Snow takes off at Merimbula

TEENAGE Torquay kitesurfer Jarrod Snow has impressed on the waves up north, finishing fifth in the open division in Kiteboarding Australia’s national titles.

The 37th running of the event in late November was part of the Merimbula Classic, and saw more than 80 kitesurfers take to the water over the four days.

Jarrod’s brother Adam, who went with him to Merimbula, said his brother was a dedicated 19-year-old who competed in most water sports.

“The conditions weren’t favourable for Jarrod as he had to ride backhand and had never done so before – he ended up learning quickly over four days.”

Jarrod also won best up-and-coming rider, and took home a new Ozone Reo 8m kite for his efforts.

“He puts a lot of time and effort into his riding as well as making home-made boards so it’s good to see his hard work pay off,” Adam said.

“Jarrod is always keen to get out in the water in all conditions and also boards.

“He started kiting early, at about 12, but in the last couple of years he’s stepped it up and really started to excel and improve his riding.”

Adam said the Merimbula Classic was a little different to other competitions as it was about “getting out and having fun as well and riding well”.

“There are no heats; it’s about the time you spend in the water and how well you ride. You also don’t know who the judges are, as they can be in the water with you watching or on the beach.

“It’s a great event for all ages and skill levels. The whole event has a fun feel compared to the pressure of normal events with heats.

“Organised by long-time locals and the Merimbula Sailboard Club, they keep everyone fed with a barbecue going all day and good vibes for the entire event.”
