Danny O’Brien-trained galloper King Of Leogrance has been scratched from the Melbourne on the morning of the race that stops a nation.

King Of Leogrance, who was rated a 51-1 chance in the Cup, was ruled out of the race following a vet inspection on Tuesday morning which sited lameness in the off foreleg.

The field is now reduced to 23, King Of Leogrance was set to be ridden by Damian Lane.

Danny O’Brien, who uses Thirteenth Beach to train his horses near his property in Barwon Heads, trained the 2019 Melbourne Cup winner, Vow and Declare. He remains a strong chance to do so again this year, despite losing one of his chances.

Russian Camelot is rated a 12-1 chance and will carry 53.5kg out of barrier 16. Vow and Declare will look to repeat last year’s triumph, but is more of an outsider this time around at 46-1 while Miami Bound (34-1) is the third of O’Brien’s hopes.

The Melbourne Cup will be run at 3pm at Flemington Racecourse.
