Lance Franklin calls time on AFL career
Franklin was subbed out midway through the second quarter with calf tightness during the Swans’ thrilling two-point defeat of Essendon on Saturday night.
The 36-year-old cut a dejected figure sitting on the bench and was walking with a noticeable limp when he joined his teammates at the three-quarter-time huddle.
Franklin played 354 games with Hawthorn and Sydney.
An eight-time All-Australian, Franklin has kicked just 19 goals – his lowest tally during his 19-season career – in 13 games this year.
Franklin kicked 1,066 goals in his career – the fourth most in VFL/AFL history – and is considered a lock to be inducted as a legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame upon his retirement.
He missed five matches this season due to knee issues and a suspension.
