TORQUAY local River Lawson has achieved his best competitive skateboarding achievement to date, finishing on the podium of the Australian Skateboarding League Australian Championships at Melbourne.

Hosted at Riverslide Skatepark as part of Melbourne’s Moomba Festival, the 12-year-old dynamo excelled through both days of competition in the under 13 boys division to finish in third place against Australia’s best junior riders.

Putting it all on the line in the freestyle park format, Lawson made a series of kickflip and grinding manoeuvres to put himself in second place in the qualification round, and thereafter was able to lock in high scoring rides to slide into third place on finals day.

After only picking up a skateboard to compete at the start of 2020, Lawson said he was proud of his efforts to land himself a bronze medal in the event.

“It was a really great achievement… it’s my first time on the podium at a national event and to skate alongside my friends was definitely very cool,” Lawson said.

“With the runs only being 45 seconds each, I really just had to stay in the zone, get calculated and try my absolute best.

“There was some really talented skaters in the event… including some kids locally and some that I knew from Instagram.

“Rails are my favourite, so to skate that in the event was really fun… I’m really happy with the result.”

Lawson also said that the event gave him a fantastic opportunity to represent and expose his personal skate brand ‘The Bomb Skate Company’.

Wearing some of his product including hoodies, tees, grip tapes and socks during the runs, Lawson hoped that the brand would continue to gain more viewership through him entering events.

In the future, Lawson has ambitions of making the Australian Olympic Team and pushing his skating brand through social media and YouTube.
