Local surfers win at Victorian Micro Groms Cup
A LOCAL trio topped the podium in their divisions at the Victorian Micro Groms Cup surfing event over the weekend.
Estella Carbonelli (Jan Juc), Teddy Robertson (Torquay) and Olive Robertson (Jan Juc) were victorious in the Under 12 Girls, Under 12 Boys and Under 10 Girls respectively at Torquay Beach.
The state surfing event saw more than 100 competitors take to the water with their friends to gain valuable professional surf competition experience.
Surfers were treated to fantastic waves throughout the whole weekend, with waves in the three-to-four feet range gracing the lineup.
Teddy Robertson said he was stoked to take out the event.
“We were so lucky to get pumping Torquay Point. It was such an awesome event!” Olive Robertson agreed.
“It was the best comp ever, pumping Torquay Point, the best prizes and surfing and hanging all weekend with my mates,” he said.
“I’m so stoked that Surfing Victoria put it on for us and I already can’t wait for the next one.”
In the premier Under 14 Girls division it was top seed Rose Holland who reigned supreme.
The powerful goofy footer looked at ease in the event final, powering past Phillip Island’s Scarlett Rennie with an excellent 8.00 ride.
Finishing in third was Stevie O’Day (Torquay) and fourth went to Sophie Day (Rye).
The Under 14 Boys division was won by Bondi surfer Hugo Spierings.
The New South Welshmen dominated the event and his divisional final, locking in his final heat total of 16.33 (out of a possible 20) within his first two waves.
Second place went to Mornington Peninsula rider George Everist, third was Liam Gason (North Steyne) and fourth went to Torquay’s Liam Thomson.
Other event winners included Sani Hellman (Ulladulla) In the Under 10 Boys and Ronnie Hellman (Ulladulla) in the Under 8 Mixed.
