Locals to surf at Phillip Island in new junior event
LOCALS from the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula will get their shot at gaining valuable ranking points towards a team Australia berth at the newly created Phillip Island Junior Pro presented by Bass Coast Shire.
To be held at Phillip Island from September 20-23, the event is expected to bring together more than 180 of the best Under 18 surfers from across the country in their quest for a spot in the Irukundjis team at the ISA World Junior Surfing Games.
As a 10,000-point marquee event on the Surfing Australia National Rankings, the event is one of only four events of this calibre in Australia.
Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Adam Robertson said the event would provide a fantastic opportunity for local surfers to mix it with some of the country’s best up and coming stars.
“We are so stoked to be bringing a marquee junior rated event to Victoria.
“This event will be an integral part of our junior surfing pathway and give our young aspiring athletes a chance to earn valuable points in their home state.”
Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulous supported regional Victoria gaining another marquee surfing event.
“We are proud to support this exciting new event for Phillip Island as we welcome Australia’s best junior surfers to a picturesque part of our state, helping shape our future surfing champions,” he said.
“Thanks to the Significant Sporting Events Program, the Pro will be another great event for Bass Coast and another major event for regional Victoria.”
