From The Mat – February 1, 2018
NEXT Friday night (February 9) one of our leading sponsors, Angove Wines, is putting on a special event to congratulate the club on being named Australian bowls club of the year.
The event kicks off at 7.30pm following the normal Friday night membership draws and giant meat raffles.
It will feature legendary rocker Wendy Stapleton, and entry is free. There also will be special tastings of Angove products on the night.
Also on the social front, the club has celebrated a feat which a few years ago would have been labelled as ludicrous. We signed up our 1,000th member, Aaron Lawson.
Considering that in 2006 Torquay had only 170 members and was in danger being sucked into the vortex that has swallowed many other clubs, this is a magnificent performance.
The turnaround can be traced back to the foresight of a group of people who recognised that the future lay in getting younger people involved in a fun environment and Twilighters was born.
The rest is now history.
The other important date on the immediate calendar is the members’ general meeting on Monday February 12 at 7pm, which is an opportunity for members to hear from the various club committees on what has happened around the place, and what is planned.
On the greens, most of our Saturday and MidWeek pennant teams are in the running for finals action in what is shaping as a good year.
In Saturday pennant after 12 rounds, Division 1 sat second, Division 2 was struggling, Division 4 was third, Division 6 seventh, Division 8 sixth, Division 9 third and Division 11 fourth.
In the MidWeek competition after 14 rounds, Division 1 was second, Division 2 fifth, Division 5 sixth and Division 6 was seventh.
The Twilighters also are having a great year, with full greens on both Wednesday and Thursday nights and the championships in full swing.
