From The Mat – March 1, 2018
IT’S ALL bowls, bowls, bowls for the club over the next few weeks, with Geelong region finals, the Surfcoast Classic and the Victorian Women’s Country Carnival taking the spotlight.
The MidWeek pennant season is into finals, with our Division 1 side competing while the Division 2 and Division 5 sides both just missed out. Division 6 had a struggle as the season wore on but managed to avoid relegation with a win in the last game.
The Saturday teams are well placed to be involved in several divisions. After 16 rounds, the top side was holding second place, 20 points clear of third place.
Unfortunately, the news has not been so good for Division 2, which faces a battle to avoid relegation to Division 3.
In the other grades, Division 4 was holding on the fourth place, as was Division 6. The Division 8, 9 and 11 teams were third, third and fourth respectively and in good shape to play finals.
On March 14 and 15 some of the best bowlers around the state will contest the showpiece Surfcoast Classic on our greens. This event offers the chance for mere mortals to see the likes of Victorian and Australian champ Matt Flapper in action.
It is two full days of first-class bowls. Everyone is welcome to come and have a look at the bowls, check out the club’s fantastic facilities, have a meal at the Greens Bistro and a drink from the bar.
From March 19 to 21, the women’s carnival will take up the greens and also should provide some excellent action as the best in country Victoria show off their skills.
Twilighter competitions also come to a close in March 7 and 8 with lightning premierships and grand finals bringing to an end yet another fantastic year.
The next major clubhouse event will be the Australian Crawl tribute band show entitled “Reckless”.
It is on from 8.30pm to midnight on March 10.
Tickets cost $30 for members and $35 for non-members and can be booked at the club bar.
