Hockey club gathers in a morning for Maddie
TORQUAY Hockey Club’s Morning for Maddie fundraiser saw a wide range of people from the community come together at the Geelong Hockey Centre to play hockey a good cause.
The February 8 event was arranged to raise funds for one of the club’s players, Maddie Burt, after she developed leukaemia late last year.
It also provided people not involved with a hockey team to give the sport a try in an non-threatening, informal environment.
Torquay Hockey Club president Andrew Crowley said he was delighted at the community’s support, with 80 people attending the event.
“We were so pleased to get a broad range of people there to support Maddie. We had kids as young as five and people who were in their 60s all playing hockey together.
“Maddie’s family attended the event and thanked everyone for their support.”
In addition to some hockey matches, the event included a barbecue and a raffle from which the prizes were donated from various community members and business.
Almost $1,000 was raised on the day.
A Geelong Cats jumper is also now being auctioned, which will likely add a few hundred more to that tally.
