Narrowest of margins decides All Abilities Summer Netball League champions
THE Barwon All Abilities Netball competition has rounded out in the finest of fashions, with only one point separating the overall Grand Final winners.
Last Wednesday evening, playoffs were completed for both overall and consolation winners of the summer tournament, with Newcomb/Lara taking out the top crown over Geelong West Giants, 22-21.
In the consolation grand final between the third and fourth ranked teams, Grovedale/St Joseph’s was able to oust the Surf Coast Suns also by a single goal, 14-13.
Supported by Leisure Networks and AFL Barwon, the All Abilities competition has been running as a winter competition for close to 10 years, however due to high demand, this year was the inaugural summer season.
Leisure Networks program co-ordinator Luke Maher said it was fantastic to finish the first summer season with such close results.
“Both games had a point in it… a Newcomb girl hit a game winner just before the buzzer to win the main grand final which was amazing,” Maher said.
“Because we had no PA, we had everyone singing the national anthems all together before the games to get in the spirit… there was certainly some beauty to that.
“The turnout throughout the summer tournament was great… it’ll segue nicely now into our All-Abilities football league which will kick off in the coming month.”
