Pod premiers: Lorne defeats Irrewarra-Beeac in Grand Final
AFTER a five-year wait, Lorne is back on the Colac & District Football League map, following the Dolphins’ three-goal win in Saturday’s Grand Final.
The Dolphins claimed its 14th Colac flag last weekend following a hard-fought win over Irrewarra-Beeac at Colac’s Central Reserve, taking out the contest 7.8 (50) to 4.8 (32) and bringing the cup back to Stribling Reserve.
Playing coach Ed Curnow’s side led by 10 points at the quarter-time break and extending its advantage out to 18 points at half time, leading 41-13.
The Dolphins struggled to mount any scoreboard pressure in the second half, only managing one more major for the rest of the game, while the Bombers kicked two goals in the third to set up a nail-biting fourth.
Irrewarra-Beeac failed to kick a goal in the last term as Samual Torpy kicked the game-sealing score 10 minutes into the fourth quarter on his way to a best-on-ground medal.
Lorne forward Jackson Bight was the only multiple goal-kicker with three, while George Curnow, James Hughes and Jesse Middleton all found their mark on the day for the Pod.
Torpy, Bright, Corey Przastek, Xavier Huxtable, Ted Middleton and Jesse Middleton were named best performers for the Dolphins.
Mitchell Thornton, Bryce McDonald, Tyler Flanigan, William Hoye, Max Hutchinson and Edward Dexter were listed as top contributors for Irrewarra-Beeac.
This year’s premiership is the club’s 22nd overall in its history and its seventh since the turn of the century.
