Portarlington Golf Club – March 1, 2018

February 28, 2018 BY

THE final round of junior pennant competition was completed on Sunday February 11. While not as successful as they had hoped in terms of wins and losses, team manager Steve Cogger reports that they consistently played in the true spirit of golf, never giving in and displaying outstanding sportsmanship. Thank you to our team of Jack Martin, Max Edmanson, Nick Unsworth, Sophie Hood, Jamie Schreuder, Hannah Mawson and Max Mawson for representing Portarlington. Men’s Pennant starts on Sunday March 18 and Women’s Pennant starts on Monday March 5. Best wishes and good golfing to all our pennant players for successful seasons.

Tuesday February 20, Men’s Par
A windy day didn’t deter 156 men from entering, and John Powe’s new shoulder didn’t deter him from scoring a mammoth +8 to clean-up the day (what will he do when he gets the other one done?) and C Grade from Tony McLeod’s +5. Max Edmanson also scored +5 to top A Grade by a shot from Brian Hazell, Ian Fraser was best B Grader with +3 on a countback from Peter Kavanagh, and Steve Scott headed D Grade with +4 by a shot from John Cleary. The pinshots were played by Max Edmanson, Matthew Barnes and Jim McGrath, and Josh Kent collected the ProPin.

Wednesday February 21, Ladies’ Stableford
A good roll-up of 71 ladies enjoyed the day, with Jeanette Johnson following up some very good recent form with a Trophy of the Day score of 38, also winning B Grade on a countback from Jacqui Murrihy. Jeanette’s effort also scored her the coveted “Grannies Trophy”. Marg Burchell and Helen McDonald topped A Grade with 36, and Jan Rain was best C Grader with 38 from Judy Fox’s 34. The NTPs were won by Sue Hazell and Joyce Vagg, and the ProPins by Nancy Hendy (0-25) and Kath Howes (26-45).

Saturday February 24, Men’s and Ladies’ Stableford
A tough day at the office for the 180 players who turned out with strong north-westerlies making life difficult. Tom Dewey defied the odds with a Trophy of the Day score of 40 points, also leading C Grade by a point from Dennis Murphy. Stuart Anderson topped the A Graders with 38 from Matt Salter on a countback, Sean Walton led the B Graders with 39 on a countback from Stan Mascoll, and best D Grader was Ian Woodhouse with 38 by a point from Ian Morris. The NTP vouchers went to Stuart Anderson, David Dobney and Peter Bauer, and Kevin Wilson was the ProPin winner. Leading lady was Joyce Livermore with the top score of the day of 42 points, and Lou Blomley was right on her heels only one point behind. The NTPs were scored by Judy Said and Joy Francis and the ProPin by Sandy Issell.
