Portarlington Golf Club – November 23, 2017
OUR Captains have recently put out a letter to competition players to indicate that there are some who are failing to remove their names from the timesheet when they are not intending to play. Apparently, the number of “no shows”, while not a new problem, is on the increase, and has a far-reaching impact on others, such as precluding other players from playing at all, or at their preferred time, and subsequent loss of club revenue. Players are asked for a minimum of 24 hours notice if they do not intend to play. Do the right thing!
Tuesday November 14, Men’s Stroke
A warm one for the 122 men in the field, and super vet Len Elder came through with a great net score of 66 to win the day and D Grade from a 70 by Ian Assender. Wayne Hood was best in C Grade with 70 from Glen Downard’s 72, the B Grade choccies went to new committeeman Peter Solohub with 69 from Tony Fiteni’s 71, and Rex Johnson put an excellent net 67 together to top the A Graders, three shots clear of Dennis Wood. The NTPs were scored by John Hill, Lindsay Powell and Brian Hazell, who also added the ProPin to his day’s work.
Wednesday November 15, Ladies’ Stableford
We had 57 ladies grace the greens, with Fran Stone having a day to remember with her outstanding 43 points to win Trophy of the Day and C Grade from Janet Campbell’s 36. Jacqui Murrihy was the best B Grader with 41 followed by a 38 from Joyce Vagg, and Judith Webber topped the A Graders with 36 on a countback from Jacky Rowe. The pinshots were won by Shirley Bell and Jenny Champion, and the ProPins by Nancy Hendy (0-25) and Chris Trezise (26-45).
Saturday November 18, Men’s and Ladies’ Stableford
Another superb day attracted 156 men and 32 ladies to the fray, with no excuses for poor golf, even though I needed them! With three players heading the field on 42, it was down to a countback to decide Trophy of the Day, and well done to Rick Korb who managed that honour, and C Grade by a point from John Wootten. Daniel Hopgood’s 42 won him A Grade from David Burke’s 39, a 41 by Matthew Kelly topped B Grade from Gary Edwards by a point, and Ian “handbrake” Flanders left the motor running to score 42 and head D Grade from a 40 by John Powe. The NTPs were played by Mr Flanders, John Hill and Brian Spalding, and Sean Rodwell scored the ProPin. “Orange Sue” Hazell, topped the ladies event with 38 points by a point from “the other Sue” Gregory, with Jacky Rowe another point back in 3rd place. The NTPs were won by Helen Powe and Jenny Pearson, who also scored the ProPin.
