Roos and Warriors to open finals

ANGLESEA and Modewarre will play in the first BFL final to be played on a non-league venue in 11 years when they clash in Saturday’s qualifying final at Leopold Community Bank Oval. The Roos tuned-up for their first finals appearance under Paul Carson with a comfortable 64-point win over Drysdale, while the Warriors snapped a 12-game losing streak against Geelong Amateur following a 30-point victory. That win was highlighted by the performance of small forward Josh McDonald, who followed up his five-goal effort in the Round 17 win over Barwon Heads with a seven-goal hail against Ammos. Star Anglesea forward Jordan Erskine also kicked seven majors to end the home-and-away season, taking his tally to 72 for the season. However, it wasn’t enough for Erskine to be the first Roo to claim the BFL goal kicking award since 1994, with Barwon Heads sharpshooter Mitch Phelps – who also started the final round on 65 goals – kicking 12 against Newcomb to finish with 77. Anglesea and Modewarre split their two meetings during the season. The Roos were triumphant by 23 points in Round 3, with the Warriors reversing the result when they claimed a 36-point victory in Round 13. Modewarre will be making its first qualifying final appearance since finishing third in 2001.

Geelong Amateur (4th) vs. Queenscliff (5th) @ Leopold Community Bank Oval, Sunday 2.10pm
GEELONG Amateur and Queenscliff will both enter the finals off final round losses which cost both the opportunity of finishing the home-and-away season with the double-chance. Ammos was held to just two goals in the first half in suffering a 30-point loss to Modewarre, while the Coutas fell by 19 points to Ocean Grove. Like the qualifying final combatants, Amateur and Queenscliff shared the honours across their two meetings during the season. Ammos won by 28 points in Round 8, and the Coutas got home by two goals in Round 16. On that day at Queens Park, Queenscliff kicked eight goals to one in the third quarter to turn a one-point half-time deficit into a 42-point advantage at the final change. However, the Coutas had to withstand a withering fourth quarter burst from the home team to claim a crucial four points. Ammos were without star forward Mitch Day that afternoon. His combination with veteran Matt Walsh is likely to provide Queenscliff with some headaches. At the other end of the ground, Amateur will need to contain the likes of Daniel DeGois, Jayden Durran, Cam Habgood and Jason Graham.
