Roos look to rally ahead of massive May

ANGLESEA will be looking to bounce back from last week’s frustrating loss to neighbour club Torquay when it faces a winless Newcomb tomorrow afternoon on the road.

Roos playing-coach Jordan Keras said there were lapses in concentration from his side last weekend against the Tigers, which he hopes to address against the Power on Saturday.

“Newcomb has mixed form, they were obviously jumped in Round 1 but have played some great footy ever since with Queenscliff getting over the top of them last time out, but it’s hard to read into that too much,” Keras said.

“Notoriously, they’ve played some pretty good footy against us ever since I first started coaching this side and they’ll be a better outfit than they were last year.

“We just want to make sure we’re playing the best brand of footy we can this week, and if we come out and play well, I think we’ll be hard to beat and hopefully we can get back in the winner’s list.”

Keras has been impressed with the side’s new signings to this point, namely former AFL player Tom Couch who has been a frequent point of contact for Keras this season.

“Couchy will continue to get better and better, you’ll find his name will pop up quite a bit later in the season, he’s a really good sounding board for me too, he has a really good footy brain and he sees the game differently which is hard to come across often,” Keras said.

“Anton Woods is finding his feet, and his family will be down the coast in the next few weeks, so it’ll be great to get some continuity with him at training and with the squad.

“Courtney [Wedderburn] has been great too; he’s a real competitor and we’re rapt to have him here as well.

“We still believe there’s some gelling to take place, but that’s the good thing about footy, there’s 18 rounds plus finals to get ourselves right for the end of the season.”

Anglesea has had an objectively tough draw to open the 2024 season, playing all four other Bellarine Football League finalists from the 2023 season through five rounds, suffering their two losses to date to premiers Torquay and last year’s runner-up Drysdale.

The Roos’ outlook for the next four rounds is favourable, playing 9th placed Newcomb, 8th placed Portarlington, 3rd placed Geelong Amateur and last placed Ocean Grove over the next month.

Anglesea and Newcomb begin their clash at Grinter Reserve tomorrow at 2.10pm.
