THE South Coast Sharks’ incredible inaugural season has been elevated further, after claiming victory at the AFL Masters Vic Country mid-season State Carnival.

The Sharks took on all comers on Saturday to claim the lightning premiership-style carnival at Kialla Recreation Reserve in Shepparton.

Sharks president David O’Brien said last weekend’s success was a marker of how much the club’s first season has exceeded expectations.

“It was obviously a great day for the Sharks, for Vic Country football and the rest of the clubs who participated.

“It is the most competitive day on the calendar for Vic Country Masters footballers aside from the National Carnival held later in the year.

“But the group did extremely well to play at such a high standard during its two qualifying games and then again in the Grand Final against Melton.”

Sharks captain Darren “Podge” Morrish was named best on ground in the decider, before being presented with the carnival trophy alongside his teammates.

The South Coast Sharks won the Vic Country Masters Mid-Season Carnival in Shepparton on Saturday.

O’Brien said the club’s focus now returned to completing its season proper, with two games remaining.

South Coast Sharks players will be encouraged to apply to be part of Vic Country’s National Carnival side, playing in Fremantle, West Australia from September 29 to October 5.

Expressions of interest will also be sought from Bellarine and Surf Coast-based Masters footballers to take part in this year’s Eliza McGowan Cup, a friendly contest between two Masters sides representing Torquay and Anglesea.

“This year’s cup will be held on Sunday, November 24 in Anglesea and we’re also looking at featuring a women’s game for the first time, so we’d love to hear from as many female footballers as possible for it,” O’Brien said.

“This year’s cup is a great chance for players and families to come out and we’ll use it to create a wider celebration for local Bellarine and Surf Coast footballers as a whole, with a raft of entertainment and activities in the works.”
