Small swell delivers big family wins
SOUL Longboard Club hosted its second club day for the year at 13th Beach in Barwon Heads on March 16, dishing up fun competition for avid surfers.
Ordinary waves prompted contest director Brian Tucker to check out the conditions early before making the call to move to Boings.
A small but consistent easterly swell meant competitors were able to achieve some good scores despite the unideal conditions.
“The amazing thing is we had ordinary waves, but it certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the huge turnout,” Brian Tucker posted on social media.
As most surfers were competing in two divisions, the judging table was “a hive of activity”.
Both junior heats boasted a full line-up, with at least six new family members taking part in the competition.
Piper Needham took the top spot in the Junior Girls division, while “Roo” was crowned the winner in the Junior Boys category. Roo was also the runner-up in the Open B event.
Jason Illingsworth delivered strong scores in the Open A and Over 40 divisions, paddling his way to victory in both events.
Mel Renton-Wright placed first in the Women’s division alongside runner-up Nyoka Evans and Sophie Thomas (third).
President Andrew Brown said the club prides itself on its inclusive environment.
“This club has always promoted itself as a family friendly club.
“We are well placed in the community to provide a safe and fun place to get together with family and friends and have a surf.
“It’s a great way to get to know other families and surfers who you see around the beach and surf with during the year.”
The next club day is on April 13 at Ocean Grove Main Beach.
