Super 10’s strut their stuff
AN INITIATIVE of Tennis Australia aimed at promoting tennis to our very youngest players, the Super 10’s Program has seen three Surfcoast youngsters selected to participate.
In early April there was a “challenge day”, held at Dendy Park Tennis Club in Melbourne, with a view to unearth and cultivate the tennistalent of age 10 and under players.
Starting with 185 entrants, it was eventually whittled down to just 34 juniors, who are under the guidance of coaches, developing the culture of fair play, teamwork and acknowledgement.
Players were divided into boys and girls teams (four players per team), competing in modified match format of 50 minutes of singles and doubles each week, playing Fast Four tennis. Alongside the teams run a development squad of eight boys and girls, who feed into the competition.
Surfcoast Tennis Club coach Olivia Rich is one of Tennis Australia’s talent development coaches and she is rapt that three Surfcoasters gained selection in that elite group of 34 players. They are Mackenzie Walters, Liam Polizzi and Matilda Jablosnki. The program runs for six weeks, concluding on May 27.
Great news for the quite recently amalgamated clubs that make up Surfcoast Tennis Club (Bellbrae, Torquay and Jan Juc); really going great guns with a very impressive 479 members.
