Day of firsts for Surf Coast basketball
THE newly formed Surfcoast Chargers took to the courts on Friday last week to represent the region for the first time.
The Under 14 Girls and Under 16 Boys were the first teams to don the Surfcoast Chargers jerseys as they both competed in grading matches for the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL).
The games both teams played were the first matches in the second round of grading, but the first time they had played with their new branding.
Surfcoast Basketball Association president Nicole Crammond said it was a milestone for the association.
“It’s a proud moment for our association and just another step forward to giving our young people a pathway that’s local for kids that want to go down that road.
“It gives the kids playing in our local competition something to strive for.”
After only fielding a boys’ side last year, the association was able to play a girl’s side in the VJBL for the first time.
Ms Crammond said the association was “really, really pleased with this”.
Both sides lost their games on Friday but have otherwise been showing good progress in the early stages of the season.
