Surf Coast FC skipper liking what he sees amid 9-0 start

May 31, 2024 BY

AN UNBEATEN start to 2024 is a whole team effort according to Surf Coast FC’s captain, with another challenger to enter the fortress of Banyul Warri Fields.

Surf Coast FC First XI captain Kreso Jurkovic said each week to date during his side’s 9-0 run had started with a collective effort, beginning with the side’s defence and resulting in goals in front of the net.

“It’s all going fantastic at the moment, we know we have things we need to continue to improve on to make ourselves better one game at a time.

“We went up over Moonee Ponds 4-0 before we gave up a pair of goals, but that’s one of the things we’re focused on getting better at, playing the full 90 minutes.

“Overall though, we’re doing a lot of things right and we hope that can continue later in the season.”

The Coasters go up against third-seeded Melbourne City tomorrow (Saturday, June 1), who have already lost three contests to date.

Jurkovic, who slots into head coach Denis Holtgrefe’s defence, says his fellow defenders have taken great pride in their stingy defence to date, allowing the fewest goals (five) by a team this season.

The success in defence has also translated to attack for Surf Coast’s forwards, leading to 39 scores for the team.

John Pykett also leads State League 4 West with 12 goals this season, a sight Jurkovic is happy to see from the other end of the pitch.

“It’s been great to see, 100 per cent,” Jurkovic said.

“As defenders, we want to do our job every week, so when we see our attackers tearing it up out front, doing their job, it makes things so much easier and takes the pressure of us as well.

“If we all do our roles, we know we can do the job and get those three points every week.”

Surf Coast FC fans can see their side in action from 5pm on Saturday. A win for the team could see them extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points.
