SURF Coast FC have capped off their strong representation at the Western United Cup with a club win in the Under-13 girls competition.

Eight of its players also featured in the victorious Under-11 Geelong representative team.

The all-girls soccer tournament took place in Ballarat and saw a record number of registrations, with more than 1,300 players and 96 teams from Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand taking part across various age brackets.

Surf Coast FC entered eight teams across the Under-9 to Under-17 age groups and had players representing the club in the Geelong Country Under-11 and Under-14 representative levels.

The Under-11 side won its final on penalties following a 2-1 semi-final win over a strong Mooney Valley Knights Elite outfit. At a local level, all eight girls had been playing above their age group in the Under-13 level, which primed them to dominate when competing against girls their age.

Club director Adrian Leijer said he was thoroughly impressed with their efforts in the representative competition.

“They just continue to improve, and for their age, the football they’re playing is of a very high level,” he said.

“Seeing eight of the 13 girls in the Geelong representative team from Surf Coast is an amazing achievement. They’re such a talented and competitive group, but what makes me proudest is the way they handled themselves against very tough opposition.”

Meanwhile, in the Under-13s, Surf Coast FC beat North Sunshine Eagles FC 3-0 to take out the Plate.
