THE Surf Coast Little Athletics Club will host a come-and-try day in October, as it looks to build its community ahead of its fifth season.

It comes after a successful winter campaign for the club that saw great results at both the Victorian cross-country championships and the Victorian all schools cross-country national championships.

Cobie O’Day placed 19th in the Under-12 girls 3km race and was the second Victorian to cross the line, earning her a team bronze medal. Pip Harper placed 34th and Sahara Lowdon placed 39th.

Club president Jarrod McMullen encouraged locals to give athletics a try at next month’s come-and-try day.

“It’s an opportunity for new families to experience what little athletics is all about,” he said.

“Kids can have a go at a range of track and field events in a relaxed, fun environment, without the pressure of competition to see if they enjoy it. It’s also an opportunity for parents to understand what little athletics is.”

As a new and growing club, McMullen explained its key focus is the community and creating a good environment for young, up-and-coming athletes.

“We are community driven club, locally minded,” he said.

“We are a small club with participation numbers that rival other centres.

“Our focus is on participation and personal growth rather than just competitions, in a relaxed environment. The results come naturally as the kids enjoy themselves and encourage each other.

“Little athletics is about having fun, making friends, and trying new things. Every child progresses at their own pace. We celebrate personal bests for all children and not just winning.

“It’s also a family-oriented junior sport, you get to be involved in assisting in various roles around our centre whilst watching your child achieve great things.

“If you’re thinking of having a go, you might be surprised how much both you and your kids love it!”

The come-and-try day will take place at Polwarth Oval on Saturday, October 4 from 8.30am to 11.30am.
