Surfcoast Stingrays look to forge new path

SURF Coast – Aireys Inlet Cricket Club is changing its names as it aims to reach new heights.

The club has changed its name to the Surfcoast Stingrays Cricket Club and hopes to recruit new players as the club dons new uniforms for the upcoming season.

Club secretary Ben Tekin said the club would maintain its roots while reaching new people.

“We originated from Aireys Inlet, and that history is really important to us. Without it we wouldn’t have been able to birth the opportunities we have today,” Tekin said.

“The change of name was to attract and service the local community.”

The club plays home games and trains at Banyul-Warri Fields’ Grenville and Polwarth Ovals in North Torquay, while also holding training sessions at Geelong Indoor Sports.

Tekin said in addition to its location and facilities, the club’s atmosphere is one of its main attractions.

“We just have a really strong community focus. We welcome people of all abilities, so we’re able to give people a chance who might not have been getting a go at other clubs.”

The Geelong Cricket Association club has ambitions to grow and field more teams across various divisions including an Under 13 team for the upcoming season.

Tekin said the early signs are promising.

“Last season we had 28 players, in comparison to that we now have 44 players registered.”
