Teams sought for relay challenge
AT LEAST 10 more fundraising teams are wanted for this year’s Surf Coast Relay for Life in Torquay.
David and Karen Tullis, of Torquay Lotto and Gifts, have thrown down the gauntlet to team co-ordinator Nazario (Naz) Serritell to get 30 teams to participate in the event, but the total currently sits at 20.
David and Karen, already aboard as sponsors, cause if Naz can get 30 teams involved in the March 18-19 relay at the Spring Creek Recreation Reserve.
With the overnight relay event now only seven weeks away, it is a formidable task. But Naz is not fazed.
The 20 teams already signed up are Birds of a Feather, Community Bank Sprinting Piggies, Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club, Jetts Fitness, Life Activities Club, RACV Torquay Resort, Saint Patty’s Team Green, Step Into Life Torquay, Surf Coast Council Hares, Surf Coast Council Tortoises, Surf Coast Secondary College, Surfcoast Striders, TAC Trekkers, The Bograts, Tina’s Team CFA, Torquay Football and Netball Club, Torquay Lions Club, Torquay Rotary Club, Whites Beach Wanderers and Woolworths Torquay.
The Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club recently signed up and the Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club is in discussions to be involved.
“The committee is hopeful this news will spur the Surf Coast’s other lifesaving clubs to join in,” Naz said.
“Our shift of venue and our new timeframe means it will be easier for clubs as the relay begins at 7pm on the Friday and wraps up at 7pm on the Saturday.”
Team members in the relay operate a roster to complete laps of the oval to honour carers and survivors of cancer.
A full program of entertainers will perform for most of the event, observing the “no-noise”
curfew at night, and a silent auction will be held as part of the program.
Those interested in forming a team, which can range from a couple to a large group, can contact Naz on 0412 531 083 for advice or help.
