THE SANDS TORQUAY – July 11, 2019
Wednesday July 7 – Stroke Medley (Blue and Red Tees) (5th Round Winter Classic) A third of the way through the classic. With some big moves made in round 5. Competitors were off the white tees today and had to count them all. Conditions were tough with a heavy course and cold swirling winds and raining coming in from time to time throughout the day. Charlie Repcak (18) was pretty keen on his chances before teeing off today and took the honours with a top score of nett 69 from Dicky Hammett (8) on nett 70. We have a new leader now with club captain Al Hartley (11) showing the way on 4750 points from Phil Eltringham (10) quietly going about his business on 4250 points, Phil third on a countback for today’s round.
Thursday July 4 – Stableford Medal (Red Tees). Tough day out there on the links for the ladies with a small but talented field to contest the July Medal. Marg Hales [10] grinded her way to 31 points over coming a fast finishing Lynne Hyett [24], getting her on a countback for the medal. DSR: 76.0.
Saturday July 6 – Men’s and Ladies Stableford (Blue and Red Tees) (Walden Cloud Waltz Sands Anniversary). Great day out there on the links for a Sands Special event, with teams of four playing for the inaugural Walden Cloud Waltz trophy. The team of Simon Baum [10], Rob Danby [6], David Beenie [17] and Tim Jarman [3] had their names etched onto the trophy for 2019, finishing on 90 points. Coming in the runners up position was Geoff Proposch [11], Terry Beggs [14], Luke Vassallo [7] and Damian Chester [19] on 88 points. The ball pool ran down the line to 82 points. The Men’s nearest to pins went to Peter Anderson (5th), Jim Demetrious (7th), Brian Kruger (13th) and Dean Smith (17th), while the Ladies nearest to pins went to Merle Whitnall (5th), Marg Hales (7th), Sharon Stewart (13th) and Maggie Juniper (17th). Liam Buchanan and Marg Hales also took home the Longest Drives (3rd), while Michael McAllum and Judy Hodgkins took home the Straightest Drives on the 14th. Big thanks to Steve Power and his Pro Shop disciples for organising the event!
Sunday July 7 – Stableford Medley (White and Gold Tees). Not a bad winters morning for golf with a solid little field and wind out there to trouble the members and visitors in the medley competition. For the few that went out around lunch time, it was certainly tougher. Marianne. Bridgart [22] took the mickey out of the competition, finishing on a massive 42 points. Michael Roche [14] was next best on 40 points. The ball pool ran down the line to 38 points.
