Thorne signs with Geelong for 2024
GEELONG’S replacement for outgoing ruck Erin Hoare has been announced, with Box Hill’s Caitlin Thorne jumping on board for the 2024 season.
The Cats introduced Thorne a week ago following Hoare’s retirement announcement, with the club tying up the final loose end list-wise with pre-season preparations well underway.
Geelong assistant general manager of football Brett Johnson said the Cats are excited to integrate Thorne straight into the AFLW squad.
“Caitlin has demonstrated great potential in both the QAFLW and VFLW, showcasing versatility across midfield and defensive positions.
“Despite her youth, Caitlin brings valuable senior football experience to our team. We eagerly anticipate her transition into the AFLW with Geelong, where she will continue to evolve and refine her game.”
Thorne is the Cats’ sixth new player for 2024, joining signings Lilly Pearce (replacement player for Liv Fuller), Bella Smith (via a three-way trade), Kate Kenny (Other Sport Rookie), Chantal Mason (drafted) and Bryde O’Rourke (drafted).
Thorne has been part of the Box Hill Hawks VFLW side for the past two seasons, playing across half-back and through the midfield, with her run and carry ability a major part of her game.
The 20-year-old played her junior football in Queensland and was part of the Gold Coast Suns Academy, where she earned a spot in the 2022 Under 18 Queensland state team.
Thorne moved to Victoria last year, playing 13 games for Box Hill in her debut season, averaging 12.2 disposals, 4 tackles and 2.7 marks a game.
This season, Thorne has so far impressed with her work taking her game to another level, averaging 15.7 disposals, 7.1 tackles and 3.2 marks a game.
Geelong’s AFLW season begins at GMHBA Stadium on August 31.
