COMPETITION is tight in GCA1 as the eight clubs head into the Christmas break, with no side yet assured of a finals berth.

Reigning premiers North Geelong set the early pace, remaining undefeated until a Round 7 loss to East Belmont.

The Magpies’ strong start was built on even contributions across the line-up, combining high-scoring batting performances with consistent bowling through the opening eight rounds.

They remain the team to beat, but their path to back-to-back premierships is shaping up as a tough one.

East Belmont have emerged as another contender, with their win over North Geelong an early highlight of the season.

The Lions bowled the Magpies out for just 150 runs, before cruising to a win after declaring at 5/250.

A week earlier, they posted a season-high 303, underpinned by solid individual contributions across the order.

St Peters have also impressed early, while Grovedale have bounced back after starting the season with a three-game losing streak, showing glimpses of finals-worthy cricket.

Last season’s grand finalists have disappointed so far, dropping their first five games after allowing their opponent to make large totals with the bat.

Newcomers Lara, competing in GCA1 this season, have also spent much of the opening eight rounds near the bottom of the ladder.

The competition resumes on January 10, with all clubs scheduled for one-day matches.
