Tuesday
The Torquay ladies played the SWDGA Foursomes game with winners going onto the final round to be held later this year. Our winning team was Lyndsey Dunstan and Kathy Simson with 69 an impressive 8 shots ahead of runners up Lyn Wilson and Michele Hayes on 77. Isabel Mahon shot -4 to win for the Resort competition and conditions were tough out on the course with strong and cold southerly winds. June Macrae won the 9-hole competition with -1. NTPs Norma Veale, Marilyn Young and Trudy Bath. Good luck to Lyndsey and Kathy in the final round they are a force to be reckoned with even at our club!
Wednesday
Mother Nature was still not kind for our men’s competition. It was beanies and jackets for the men today as still that cold southerly wind blew. Hot food was the go on the Bev cart today mainly just to keep their hands warm! Scores however were still impressive with those blustery winds. Robert Brzozek shot 39 points to win A grade. B grade winner John Anderson had a great round early to score 40 points. C grade went to Ian Foot also out early 40 points and D grade winner Trevor Carter came home with 38 points. Brian Brown took out the Resort with 42 points. NTPs Peter Jones, Jayson Moran, Terry Lee and Paul Horne an NTP and also hit the jackpot to win quite a prize pool!
Friday
Was the SWGA Jean Russell Salver an event which has been going since 1979. 135 ladies played the Canadian Foursomes from all over the district in honor one of our former members Mrs Jean Russell. The Jean Russell Salver was named for Mrs Russell as her contribution to the SWDGA was quite considerable. Mrs Russell was Torquay delegate for several years, president of SWDGA in 1968 and became secretary in 1970 a position she held until 1984, was treasurer in 1985 and in 1986 Mrs Russell was named the 2nd life member of the SWDLGA an honour which thrilled her greatly. Mrs Russell died in 2000. All results can be found on the SWDGA website.
