Torquay to kick-off BFNL season on Good Friday

TORQUAY Football Club is honoured to be given the opportunity to host one of the Good Friday season-opening matches in the Bellarine Football Netball League.

The Tigers will take on Ocean Grove at Spring Creek Reserve in the second Good Friday match that will kick-start the BFNL season.

Torquay coach Dom Gleeson said there was always plenty of anticipation surrounding the start of a season, but to be entrusted with such a fixture is something the club is stoked about.

“We’re really happy as a club to be allocated a game like that one,” Gleeson said.

“We have proven we can do it (host marquee fixtures) well.

“AFL Barwon have been good enough to give us the game.

“Good Friday is one of those days where Torquay as a town is thriving over that weekend.

“It does the football club the world of good.”

Portarlington and Newcomb is the other Good Friday match, on April 2.

In the Geelong Football League, St Mary’s will host Leopold under lights on Saturday, April 10 to begin the season.

The only other match on that weekend will be St Albans versus Colac, being played at 2.10pm.

Leopold coach Jason Tom said the excitement around the group was building, and that was evident in the numbers at training.

“It shows in our numbers more than anything, we’ve had some of the biggest numbers I’ve seen at the club,” Tom said.

“That’s a reflection of missing a year of footy… speaking to the guys, they’re just excited to play footy.

Remaining round one GFL action will take place on the following weekend, including a Sunday game.

In the Geelong and District Football Netball League, round one matches will be played on April 10 while Corio will host Belmont on Sunday, April 11.

East Geelong A grade netball coach Dave Boyce said after missing a year of local sport, everyone at the club was eager to get back into it.

His side will face powerhouse Thomson in the first round in what bodes to be one of the matches of the season-opening fixture.

“I think because we’ve had the whole year off… the season is a couple of months away, and the girls are really starting to look forward to it.

“We’ll be looking to get off to a good start… (but there’s) no bigger task than Thomson.”
