Torquay Triathlon returns with added event
THE Surf Coast will come alive on Sunday, November 9 with the return of the Torquay Triathlon.
Triathletes will complete a 400m swim, 15km bike ride and 4km run as they make their way along the coastline.
This year marks the second year of the event and the first year a kids category has been introduced.
Kids between the ages of seven and 12 will complete a 100m swim, 3km ride and 1km run in a non-timed event.
Event organiser Andrew Letts said for the kids, it’s all about the achievement of completing the course.
“We really want to encourage participation at all levels and the idea of having an event that they could work towards for younger kids.
“We had a lot of requests last year for kids younger than 13 to participate, so after speaking with Aus Triathlon, we thought why not include a kids race.
“We also think, from a family point of view, it’s great that both parents and kids can race at the same time.”
The remainder of the event will follow a similar format to last year and will feature an even bigger event village with more sponsors and community partners jumping on board.
After welcoming 470 participants at last year’s event, Mr Letts said the triathlon has a real community feel about it.
“We’ve had such enormous support from different businesses around Torquay. It’s a positive day, it’s a fun atmosphere, it’s a real personal challenge, it’s just you versus the course.
“It’s a distance that I feel if you’re not a very seasoned triathlete or just a seasoned athlete, that you could have a go at and achieve on the day.”
“There’s going to be an elite athlete field as well that is quite stacked, so there’s some really good racing on offer to watch.”
