Voting open for Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards

August 16, 2019 BY

The finalists of the Geelong Refinery Club Legend Awards have now been announced, with voting open for the People’s Choice Awards.
Now in their third year, the awards look to recognise those who dedicate their time and energy to help their sporting clubs and the people within their clubs.
Viva Energy are sponsoring the award, and their general manager of refining Thys Heyns said he was thrilled by the influx of nominations this year.
“It is fantastic to not only see a growth in nominations in the Award’s this year, but also that there is a great pool of nominees across ages, sports and locations around the Geelong community,” Heyns said.
“What makes these awards really special is that we get the community’s direct involvement through the People’s Choice Awards. We want everyone to have a say in who they feel are the heroes in our community.”
Last year the award was won by Barwon Soccer club president David Rea.
Rea not only founded the club, but proceeded to serve it in many different capacities. The club now has over 500 members.
This year sees the introduction of female categories, and trailblazer categories, the latter being for people under 35.
Several of this years nominees are from the Bellarine and Surf Coast regions.
FC Leopold’s Rick Scade and Special Olympics, Barwon’s Fred Forssman are nominated for the Male Club Legend Award.
While Ocean Grove Football Netball Club’s Jesse Sutton is among the finalists for the Female Trailblazer Award, and Drysdale Football Club’s Michael Trewhella among those for the Male Trailblazer Award.
There is a combined prize cash-pool of $55,000 across the categories, some of which will go to the winners and some of which will go to their respective clubs.
All the finalists from the various categories can be voted for in the People’s Choice Awards.
Voting closes Thursday August 22, with the various winners being announced on Wednesday September 4.
