Water polo players make a splash in Geelong

The competition is usually held weekly in Melbourne and runs from October through to March next year with a break over the school holiday period, however moved to Geelong for the weekend’s games.

THE Geelong Marlins club hosted 28 teams from Melbourne for double rounds of Water Polo Victoria’s Junior competition at Kardinia Aquatic Centre at the weekend, celebrating the developing junior water polo team in the Geelong region.

The competition – which is usually hosted in Melbourne – relocated the weekend’s games to Kardinia in support of the Marlins who currently field two under 12 teams.

The teams travel to Melbourne to play every second week and couldn’t contain their excitement to play on their home turf.

Over 250 young players braved through 27 games of water polo over the course of the day, resulting in a few tired little tackers on their journeys home to Melbourne, the Surf Coast and parts of Geelong.

Water Polo Victoria’s competitions officer Tony Ryan said the day was a great success and was thrilled with the way the three pools were set up by Kardinia pool management and the Geelong Marlins club, as well as parent support groups.

“All teams and families were keen to return to Kardinia for more games as the competition progresses,” he said.
