Winless weekend for Cats men
GEELONG Premier Men’s Firsts have suffered a narrow loss to Melbourne University in a rain-affected weekend of cricket.
The Cats first played against Northcote in a T20 on Saturday morning, however the wet conditions caused the match to be abandoned after five overs.
They then turned their attention to Melbourne University in an afternoon T20 clash that was reverted to DLS format, again due to rain.
Geelong were sent in to bat first and struggled to get going, finishing at 10/153. Tom O’Connell top scored with 29 runs.
Melbourne University chased down the target score in the 17th over, doing so with seven wickets in hand. Dhruv Poojari Redhu made an unbeaten 54 including the winning runs.
The loss sends the Cats down to 12th spot with a 4-4 record.
They will play another two T20 matches this weekend against Footscray and Essendon, hoping to secure wins and shoot back up the ladder.
The Seconds’ first T20 against Northcote was also abandoned, and they went down to Melbourne University after failing to overcome their target score of 142.
They will also play Footscray and Essendon in T20 double-headers this weekend.
Geelong’s Thirds and Fourths played just one T20 match against Northcote, with both sides going down in tight finishes. They both face Footscray tomorrow (Saturday, December 13).
