Wylie wins maiden TBC open
TULLY Wylie claimed his first Torquay Boardriders Club Open event crown on Saturday, winning in emphatic fashion on his 18th birthday.
TBC’s 5th Aggregate on the 2018 calendar was proudly presented by DBS Homes, with the club met with 2-3ft Winkipop under light winds providing a great day of high performance surfing.
After dropping the day’s only perfect 10 point ride in his Quarter Final heat, Wylie continued his dominant run in the final leaving his competitors in a combination situation, requiring two new wave scores to surpass his 18 two wave total.
It was Wylie’s day, his heavy footed backside attack in absolute rhythm.
“I’m so stoked to get my first TBC win!” Wylie said.
“I’ve been trying to win one of these things forever, to win on my birthday is an absolute treat”
Second place went to Indi White, third Tom Allan and in fourth place was Cahill Bell-Warren.
The Open Women’s division delivered the day’s most entertaining performances, with Jazz Wylie, Angela Ball and Mia Huppatz finishing in second, third and fourth places respectively. In the event, the final was owned by Rip Curl Most Outstanding Performer award recipient India Robinson, winning with two 9+ point rides and the day’s highest two wave total of 18.80.
Robinson also left a trail of destruction through the Open Men’s draw, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
The U/18 Boys division also thrived in the fun conditions, with Jack Kay holding of a late charge from Indi White to take it out.
Marcus Huppatz continued his run of form, winning his third consecutive Masters division, with Brian Currie going back to back in the Legends.
After a year plagued by low wave counts, Todd Liddy tore multiple Winki walls to pieces and in the process took the Grands Masters title.
The youngest divisions of the day left sunk their underaged frames into the playground like line-up, Jazz Wylie and Spencer Kay put up a performances reminiscent of their elder siblings, swinging hammers on their way to victory in the Under 16 Girls and Boys respectively.
