A taste of Canada

The offerings at Maple Bakery are extensive, with the display window often featuring multiple levels of treats.
TORQUAY’S Maple Bakery is bringing a slice of Canada to the Surf Coast, serving up homemade patisseries and quality coffee.
Run out of the West Coast Business Park, the bakery opened its door four years ago, when the owners transformed a simple shed into a thriving business.
Among the offerings are Pecan pie tarts, hoodoo tarts, Nanaimo bars and much more, along with their items featuring a French twist including an array of croissants.

One of the most popular sweet treats is the beaver tails, a specialty in Canada, featuring a big cinnamon doughnut in the shape of a beaver tail with small markings on it.
Venue manager and head chef Lachie Wright said their Canadian offerings were really popular among customers, alongside the range of sandwiches and pies.
“We offer a sandwich range as well as homemade pies and sausage rolls, which isn’t too Canadian but that’s something we’ve introduced for the area.

“We’ve taken the Canadian idea, but then also introduced a bunch of fresh sandwiches that we use Zeally Bay’s bread for and everything’s made in house.”
To enjoy the beef pies and beaver tails, customers are encouraged to get in early with the two favourites often selling out before the day is done.
When it comes to coffee, the supplier isn’t far away souring all their beans and hot chocolate powder from Surf Coast Coffee Roasters, their go to since opening.

Wright believes it’s Maple Bakery’s ambience and the feel of the space that makes it unique, alongside their wide variety of offerings.
“You walk in, you’ve got your Canadian flags and then you walk to the front window and there’s so much variety.
“It’s right there and you can get everything that you could think of and if you come at 7am, the whole thing’s triple tiered and stacked.
Maple Bakery and all its house made goods can be found at Unit 40/10 Cylinders Drive, Torquay, open from 7am until 3pm Monday to Friday and 8am until 2pm Saturday and Sunday.
