Being prepared with Martial Arts
HEAD Instructor of Endurance Martial Arts Alistair Lawson had his skills put to the test a month ago when he was approached walking near his home.
Making his way to a boxing class, a man wearing a black hoodie, gloves and a black scarf around his mouth with only his eyes visible began to shout and demand money from Lawson.
A martial artist for more than 42 years, he assessed the situation for threats and dangers, preparing himself for any conflict he may face.
Before the situation escalated, he was able to manage what was unfolding without any physical response needed.
“Unfortunately, these situations are becoming more and more common, and no-one is guaranteed to be safe from such aggression,” he said.
“As I sized up my would-be attacker, I could see his hand in his pocket and this was an indication that there could be a potential weapon.
“With all the skills and all the training I have done over the years, it is still always the best outcome to not have to use your physical skills if at all possible.”
While the verbal threats from the man were not backed up by anything physical, keeping a safe distance allowed Lawson to set up for a defensive response if needed.
“I felt in good control, I was very confident to handle him verbally and physically if he had advanced and made a move towards me.

“It is situations like this that have made me grateful of my dedication and discipline over the years as it could have easily been a different outcome if I didn’t feel as prepared as I was.”
Lawson believes when it comes to being safe and learning life skills, Martial Arts has to be in the top three, alongside learning to swim.
Martial arts prepares people for any dangers they might face, helping people know what to do if they get in trouble, with preparation key.
