MELI’S Jessica Smith and Keeley Davies are leading the march forward towards a workplace where women are empowered to succeed and everyone in the community can thrive.

Since forming just two years ago following a merger between Bethany and BCYF, the organisation has grown to become one of the region’s biggest employers.

With almost 900 employees in offices and kindergartens throughout the Barwon and Wimmera South West regions, Meli needs a dynamic, diverse, flexible and dedicated workforce.

The talent acquisition team connects the right employees with Meli for an array of frontline and support roles; from kindergarten teachers and case workers to receptionists and payroll officers.

Jess and Keeley not only seek the brightest and most talented for these and many other roles, but also look for people who share Meli’s values, knowing this fosters better outcomes for the people Meli serves.

Both are relative newcomers to Meli, joining the team about a year ago.

Keeley is a keen traveller, gardener and cook who enjoys “making everything Nonna taught me”.

After working in recruitment within the accounting and finance sectors, Keeley was drawn to Meli’s purpose.

“Moving into the not-for-profit sector was a big shift, but it was one that really aligned with my values and gave me the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work,” she said.

“Meli is more than just a workplace; it’s a space where people genuinely care about making a difference. I love the idea of being part of a team that supports the community in such a meaningful way.”

Jess had previously worked in the corporate sector with national and global brands, as well as with a state regulator, and was looking for a role that aligned more with her personal values and experiences.

“I’m a mum of three, including twin boys who are neurodivergent and inspire me in countless ways every day. Their unique perspectives and experiences motivate me to grow, learn and advocate – not just for them, but for broader communities as well,” she said

“Having known of Meli through my children’s experiences, I was excited to explore how my experience and skills could support a values-led organisation and create greater job satisfaction for me at this point in my career.”

Meli’s workforce is predominantly female, which brings unique benefits such as fostering a supportive and collaborative approach, as well as challenges.

Reflecting on International Women’s Day 2025, both Jess and Keeley agree there has been considerable progress for women at Meli and in the workplace, but continued efforts are needed.

“Gender equity is complex and influenced by political, organisational and financial structures. Meli’s proactive policies, including gender affirmation guidelines and Family and Domestic Violence Leave, demonstrate a commitment to addressing these complexities in a meaningful way,” Jess said.

“Meli has the opportunity to lead by embedding these values into our culture, policies, and practices year-round, not just during International Women’s Day.”

Keeley adds that International Women’s Day is a great time to celebrate progress, but it’s also a reminder that the work doesn’t stop here.

“Gender equality isn’t just about one day, it’s about ongoing action. I’m grateful to be part of an organisation that is committed to supporting women, and I’m excited to see how we continue to grow and evolve in this space,” she said.
