Sport the star of kids’ book series
As a father, Jasper Milligan saw first-hand how powerful sport can be in helping kids learn to keep trying, believe in themselves and enjoy the journey, inspiring him to create stories that go beyond winning and losing. Photo: Jasper Milligan/supplied.
CREATING bedtime stories for his children has led to the creation of Bacchus Marsh father Jasper Milligan’s book series.
The Future Sports Stars series spans nine kids’ books each centred on a different sport, with more titles planned.
“The books are designed to inspire young readers to be confident, resilient and active,” said Milligan.
“Each one teaches powerful life lessons through relatable young characters.
“At a time of rising screen use, Future Sports Stars gives kids a positive alternative – helping them get active, believe in themselves and try new things.
“If we can help kids build confidence early, it changes everything.
“So far, the books have covered AFL, cricket, basketball, swimming, soccer and more.
“At the end of every book I have a teaser page of the next books coming up in the series.”
Milligan and his wife Nareeda live with their four children, Leo, Lilly, Rachael and Jenna, who are all different.
“Nareeda is a real life superhero,” said Milligan.
“She is a paramedic, business owner, and the best mum that I’ve even known. We love all our children dearly.
“Our goal in life is to help them grow up into the best possible versions of themselves.
“You’ll regularly find a handful of us in the front yard playing basketball together.
“And readers might recognise their names as some of the stars in the books.”
Prior to writing the series, Milligan had no experience writing for children.
“I’ve always had a way with words, but prior to the Sports Stars series it was contained to executive briefings, boards reports, et cetera,” he said.
“This type of writing is so much more fun.
“I was originally planning on sticking to the children’s books, but that has now changed.
“Many of the parents I get feedback from say they love these books but often ask when I’m going to write a book that’s targeted at them.
“So, I’ve now found myself also writing a thriller novel.”
Milligan said the books are selling well.
“The series has been developing a nice little following,” he said.
“The consistent feedback from parents is that they are loving the positive messaging in the books, the life lessons, and the link to getting physical activity and loving it.”
